چکیده

Title of Document: Occupant Merging Behavior During Egress From High Rise Buildings Christopher Campbell, Master of Science, 2012 Directed By: Professor and Chair, Dr. James A. Milke, Department of Fire Protection Engineering Occupant merging behavior on stairwell landings is analyzed through the study of evacuation videos. Both flow rate and transit time analyses are conducted. Data is compared to the hydraulic model, which is presented in Chapter 3 of the SFPE Handbook. It is found that the flow ratio, which is the actual outflow rate from a merging event divided by the expected outflow per the hydraulic model, is on average 75%. The transit ratio, which is the normal transit time of the stairwell landing divided by the merging transit time, is found to be 0.67 and 0.70 for the floor and stair flows, respectively. Empirical data is compared to data collected from the Pathfinder 2011 egress model. Causes and influencing factors of occupant merging are proposed. OCCUPANT MERGING BEHAVIOR DURING EGRESS FROM HIGH RISE BUILDINGS By Christopher Kelly Campbell Thesis submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Maryland, College Park, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science 2012

The Process of Human Behavior in Fires

Evacuation models, including engineering hand calculations and computational tools, are used to calculate the time it takes to evacuate a building, which can then be used in an engineering safety analysis. However, there is a lack of available data and theory on occupant behavior for use by evacuation models to estimate evacuation time results and their uncertainty. In lieu of data and theory, ...

Fire evacuation in high-rise buildings: a review of human behaviour and modelling research

A review of literature related to fire evacuation in high-rise buildings was carried out with the following objectives, (1) to identify the key behavioural factors affecting the performance of people during a fire in a high-rise building, the singularities associated to this type of buildings and areas of future research; (2) to review the procedures and strategies currently adopted in high-ris...

CIFECENTER FOR INTEGRATED FACILITY ENGINEERING SAFEgress: A Flexible Platform to Study the Effect of Human and Social Behaviors on Egress Performance

Studies of past emergency events have revealed that occupants’ behaviors, local geometry, and environmental constraints affect crowd movement and govern the evacuation. In addition to comply with code and standards, building designers need to take into consideration the occupants’ social characteristics and the unique layout of the buildings to design occupant-centric egress systems. This paper...

Assessment of Occupant's Behavior on Energy Consumption: Case of Shahid Pakdel Residential Complex in Esfahan

The main share of energy consumption in the country and more than a third of its loss is in residential use. Per capita, household electricity consumption is far from the world standard, and the existence of subsidies for energy carriers in Iran, and consequently their low prices, causes occupants to pay less attention to energy consumption. Due to the policy of eliminating subsidies, the effec...

A Framework for Quantifying the Impact of Occupant Behavior on Energy Savings of Energy Conservation Measures

To improve energy efficiency—during new buildings design or during a building retrofit—evaluating the energy savings potential of energy conservation measures (ECMs) is a critical task. In building retrofits, occupant behavior significantly impacts building energy use and is a leading factor in uncertainty when determining the effectiveness of retrofit ECMs. Current simulation-based assessment ...
